Testing of weld joints

Two techniques conventional ECT and ECA are used for weld testing.

ECT techniques is performed on:

  • a longitudinal weld/circumferential weld
  • a fillet weld
  • a T-joint area

These types of flaws could be detected by eddy current testing:

  • transverse/longitudinal crack
  • radiating crack
  • crater crack
  • group of disconnected cracks
  • branching cracks
  • damage after grinding
  • undercut
  • surface pore in the form of a single pore of a group of pores
  • overflow cover layer
  • lack of penetration
  • interpass undercut
